I have always been attracted to the idea of green infrastructure. With roots in American landscape planning, green infrastructure seems to offer a language that speaks to both ecological and economic minds. From its landscape heritage emerges the equally attractive notion of ecosystem services, the benefits ecosystems supply to humans. It is, however, important to understand what green infrastructure means in different contexts. Often it is about stormwater management, particularly in combined sewer systems. Elsewhere green infrastructure is emerging as a more wide-ranting strategy, holding key insights into the rise of multifunctional infrastructure.
